We've Got The Hots For Outdoor Decor: 5 Easy Ways To Spruce Up Your Backyard

“If I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with—there’s no place like home.”

Whew, chileee—the irony! You think Dorothy had any idea 2020 would solicit a new appreciation for one’s backyard in the sense that there’s actually nowhere to go BUT our own backyards?! My thoughts: you better make sure its pretty AND comfortable—pretty damn comfortable because that’s all we’ve got.

I’ve been spending a ton more time outside with the kiddos drinking margaritas in the sun while the kids splash in the inflatable pool (tequila for me + endless water for them = lifesaver, God yes!) and making small changes to make the deck/patio more enjoyable for the entire family. So yeah, I’ve got the hots for outdoor decor as of late—here are my 5 easy (and affordable) ways to spruce up your own backyard.

Turf, Outdoor Rugs, and Other Fabrics:

The same things that make you comfy indoors are likely to have the same effect outdoors, as well. Simple additions like stylish yet comfortable pillows, seating cushions, and especially outdoor rugs (turf is currently my new favorite) feel great and warrants the freedom to enjoy your time outside without shoes or sandals. Unless you’re a country girl like me—I only ever wear shoes if I’m leaving the driveway.

Statement Pieces:

Yes, yassss—you want a bold and beautiful piece of furniture or outdoor accessory to centralize the space and ignite your senses. I personally love Patricia Urquiola’s “Tropicalia” Chaise Lounge by Moroso and similar styles that break bad with bright attention-grabbing colors. They’re super easy to find on the high and low end price wise, with not a lot of aesthetic difference or if you’re up to a DIY job you can do it yourself and make a project of it.

Designated Bar Area For Refreshments:

There isn’t a soul in sight that ever sat outside without wanting a cool refreshment for general hydration or drunkenness. So why not add a bar area? Depending on the side of your yard this could be a complete bar situation with seating and outdoor refrigeration or as simple as an outdoor bar cart to fill up and roll out as needed.

Greenery:

Not THAT kind of greenery—I’m talking purposeful landscaping and/or the curation of potted plants. Remember, when selected and placed properly plant life can be super high vibe—so pick according to the style and mood you’re trying to set for your outdoor oasis.

Lighting:

There’s nothing I love more than the transition from day to night mainly because of the light show. String lights, torches, scones, fire pit you name it—the outdoor array is endless. You can keep it super minimal or go bohemian with your outdoor lighting options to give your family and guests comfortable the right ambiance for conversation, game night, or just old fashioned chillaxing.

To spruce up your backyard without doing a complete makeover just ask yourself: “Is the space comfortable currently?” and “What kind of activities does my family partake in when we’re utilizing the space?” If you want to maximize the potential of your backyard incorporate decor and furnishings that are specific to fulfilling that need and make it fun by having those you plan to enjoy the space with pitch in!

Enjoy the beauty of your very own great outdoors—for the time being, it’s the place to be!
